Local MP Julia Goldsworthy has been trying her hand at surfing.

Joining a class with Falmouth Surf School and enjoying the perfect conditions at Newquay's Fistral Bay, Julia spent a Sunday morning learning the basics of how to surf and stay safe in the water.

Back on dry land after her lesson, Julia said:

"I'm sure there are lots of people who, like me, have grown up locally, spending lots of time in the water on our beaches and rivers. But I wonder how many of them know what all the different flags mean or how to signal for help. I've learned lots today which will help me to stay safer in the water and had a great time learning to surf too!"

Senior Instructor Spencer Webb has been surfing for 35 years and set up Falmouth Surf School four years ago. Talking about his latest pupil, Spence said:

"It's great to see an MP doing some of the things that 'normal' people do. I'm also really glad that she's helping us to raise awareness about water safety."
