MP Backs Cornish Tourism Industry

Julia made Yulelog very happy with his mackrel lunch

To mark British Tourism Week, on Friday (16th March) Julia Goldsworthy, Liberal Democrat MP for Falmouth and Camborne, visited the National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek.

British Tourism Week is organised to celebrate the contribution of the tourism industry to local and national economies; to wealth creation, regional regeneration and employment opportunities. It is also an opportunity for businesses in the tourism industry to promote themselves and the work that they do.

The sanctuary at Gweek has nearly 50 years of experience in seal rescue, rehabilitation and release. Last season, staff rescued and cared for over 40 pups.

During her visit, Ms Goldsworthy toured the site, situated on the picturesque Helford River, and discussed with members of staff the opportunities and challenges that face businesses in the Cornish tourism industry.

Commenting, Julia Goldsworthy said:

"I'm pleased to have the opportunity to get involved with British Tourism Week. Cornwall boasts a flourishing tourism industry, the county's beautiful scenery and the high quality of services and attractions are a winning combination.

"The importance of tourism to the local economy is hard to underestimate and so it is important that government and local businesses work together to promote Cornwall nationally and internationally, to ensure continued growth in visitor numbers and spending.

"The National Seal Sanctuary at Gweek is a shining example of a successful tourism business, not only is it a vibrant, fun and interesting visitor attraction, but it carries out great work throughout the year caring for seals rescued from beaches all around the Cornish coast."

Ms Goldsworthy was also lucky enough to be visiting at feeding time for some of the sanctuary's residents and was delighted to be able to serve up some fresh mackerel for grey seals Flipper and Yulelog.

Julia Goldsworthy added:

"My visit to the Seal Sanctuary was enormous fun, the residents each have their own personalities which were fascinating to observe. I would highly recommend a trip to Gweek, particularly during the winter months and now, while there are still some very cute pups bothering all the older residents with their enthusiasm."
