Merger Blow for Redruth Remploy

Local MP, Julia Goldsworthy, has expressed her concern at the news that Redruth's Remploy factory is set to merge with the factory in Penzance. Remploy has confirmed that it intends to cease operations at its site at Wilson Way, but is offering workers the option of transferring to the factory in Penzance.

Ms Goldsworthy recognises that the current network is unsustainable, with the factory in Redruth which employs over 60 people, reporting losses of £950,000 in the last financial year. However she is seeking reassurances from the Government that Cornwall's unique situation which consists of a large proportion of micro businesses and poor public transport will be taken into account.

Commenting, Ms Goldsworthy said:

"For many years, and for many disabled people, Remploy has been a lifeline. The Government owes a duty of care to the people working in these factories - and their interests must be at the forefront of minds when these changes are considered.

"It is clearly a relief that Remploy plans to keep one factory open in Cornwall and I accept that this can also be seen as an opportunity for current and future workers to integrate into the wider workforce. However, having met with many of the workers at the Redruth factory, I have heard them speak of their very positive experiences and it is therefore essential that their needs aren't now ignored.

"Whilst I recognise that some Redruth workers may be prepared to re-locate to Penzance, this will not suit, or be practical for everyone and I will be seeking reassurances that everything will be done to ease the transition that many employees may wish to make.

"The Government is right to help people into the wider workforce, but our situation in Cornwall poses some unique challenges. We have a high number of small businesses which may have relative difficulties in supporting disabled people into work. I will be using the 90 day consultation to talk to local workers about their needs and press upon Remploy managers the necessity of taking these into account when considering these proposals."
