Sir Menzies Campbell MP to pay visit to Redruth Legion in Defence Review Role

4.00.00pm GMT Tue 15th Jan 2008

Former Liberal Democrat Leader Sir Menzies Campbell MP will be visiting Redruth Royal British Legion this Saturday to hear the views of service personnel and veterans about their experiences in the military.

The visit comes as Sir Menzies Campbell embarks upon his wide-ranging inquiry into the welfare of and support given to troops and their families in response to the powerful 'Honour the Covenant' campaign led by the Royal British Legion and its representatives. Sir Menzies has been asked to lead the review by new Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg, who was elected in December.

Service personnel and veterans across the county have been lobbying their MPs in their hundreds - this event will allow them to put their views first hand to the very person leading that review for the Liberal Democrats.

Commenting ahead of the visit, local MP Julia Goldsworthy said:

"I am very much looking forward to welcoming Ming to Redruth. I have been overwhelmed by the huge local support that has been demonstrated for the "Honour the Covenant Campaign," and I am sure that there will be many people wanting to share their views and experiences with Sir Ming, as he begins his investigation into the status of the Military Covenant of this country. Ming's commission will consider both short-term factors and the longer term strategic view about the future demands that will be placed on our Armed Force.

"The Royal British Legion's Honour the Covenant campaign has highlighted the pressing need for an inquiry to consider whether Britain is doing enough to look after its armed forces and their families, both abroad and at home. Ming's work will be a crucial contribution to this important debate.
