Comment on Austin Hinkley closure

4.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 14th Apr 2009

Commenting on the 96 job losses announced at Austin Hinkley Furniture Ltd, Julia Goldsworthy MP said:

"News of nearly 100 job losses at Austin Hinkley is a devastating blow not only to the individuals affected, but also to the wider economy.

"The factory has been very busy throughout its administration period, so the fact that a buyer has not been found is particularly frustrating.

"Even at this late stage, I understand there are still avenues being explored that could see the factory re-opening in the next few months - and I will do all I can to support such plans.

"While this may offer hope for the long term future of the site, the immediate focus must be on giving people the support they need to get them back into work."
